Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the patient experience from the moment someone arrives at our facilities. While opportunities vary by location, the examples below highlight a few meaningful ways adults and students can get involved — each designed to bring comfort, connection and care to patients and their families.
A warm welcome goes a long way when a patient is nervous. Help someone find their way and ensure a smooth transition into a hospital stay.
The final steps of a hospital stay are just as important as the first. As a transporter, you'll assist patients with a safe and comfortable discharge, ensuring they get to their next destination with ease and peace of mind.
Work alongside your therapy dog to brighten a patient’s day and promote healing. It's fun for you and our patients!
Give the gift of music to help bring joy and tranquility to patients and families in lobbies and other designated areas.
Bring kindness and clarity to a busy setting. Help patients and loved ones navigate the emergency department and serve as a bridge to the care team, including nurses, doctors and other clinical staff.
Make someone’s day a little brighter. Assist customers, arrange displays, keep shelves stocked and help ensure the gift shop remains a cheerful stop within the hospital.
Be a steady source of comfort and information. Provide directions, offer updates and lend a reassuring presence in the surgical waiting area.
Volunteers must meet specific eligibility criteria and complete orientation before joining.

- Age requirements may vary by role, most roles require age 16+, (age 14+ at Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals)
- Health screening and immunizations
- Background check (ages 18+)
- Orientation session and role-specific training
