While our program is structured to develop clinical excellence, residents also have ample opportunities for scholarly work, including presentations at local, regional, and national meetings. Most trainees complete at least one research project during their time in the department.

Program structure & rotations

Our program offers a four-year, ACGME-accredited AP/CP track with integrated rotations in anatomic and clinical pathology throughout all years of training. Residents may also pursue electives within Endeavor Health – NorthShore, through our partnership with the University of Chicago, and beyond. A three-year AP-only track is also available for applicants with specific career goals.

Anatomic pathology encompasses autopsy pathology, cytopathology and surgical pathology. Residents also have the option to pursue focused electives in surgical pathology subspecialties. All residents receive compulsory experience presenting at multidisciplinary tumor boards.

  • Autopsy: 3 months
  • Cytopathology: 3 months
  • Dermatopathology: 1 month
  • Forensic pathology at the Office of the Medical Examiner of Cook County: 1 month
  • Pediatric pathology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago: 1 month
  • Surgical pathology: 16 months

Clinical pathology integrates residents into the clinical laboratories, where they work closely with faculty members and technologists. Rotations combine bench work, didactics with faculty and collaboration with staff on day-to-day laboratory issues.

  • Biochemistry/immunology: 4 months
  • Blood bank: 3 months
  • Hematopathology/flow cytometry: 4 months
  • Microbiology: 3 months
  • Molecular diagnostics: 2 months
  • Advanced (integrative) CP: 2 months

Elective rotations in anatomic or clinical pathology are available within our educational system (Endeavor Health – NorthShore and University of Chicago). Elective rotations outside of our educational system are also available.
