Program overview

Endeavor Health Elmhurst Hospital’s unique 10-month transition to practice program consists of two phases of clinical professional development, led by our Magnet-recognized preceptors and facilitators providing an outlet for reflection, feedback and continued development.

During Phase 1, medical-surgical nurse residents rotate between several inpatient clinical settings before ultimately calling a unit “home.” Guided by a preceptor, nurse residents practice time management, prioritization, person-centered care and critical thinking. Nurse residents spend 32-36 hours per week in clinical, hands-on orientation and 4-8 hours per week in the classroom.

During Phase 2, nurse residents shift to independent nursing practice. Classroom activities are focused on refining clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills and creating a sense of ownership in nursing practice. Completion of the residency program culminates with meeting professional developmental milestones and the presentation of an evidence-based practice project to peers and nursing leaders throughout the organization.
