Six hospitals receive “A” ratings and five achieve rare “Straight A” status—earned by just 12% of hospitals nationwide—as teamwork and transparency strengthen a culture of safety

Evanston, Ill. – Six Endeavor Health℠ hospitals earned A grades from The Leapfrog Group, a national distinction recognizing achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and providing the highest standards of care: Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital, Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, Highland Park Hospital and Northwest Community Hospital.

“Safety isn’t just a metric, it’s the foundation of how we deliver care,” said Lakshmi Halasyamani, MD, Chief Clinical Officer, Endeavor Health. “These top grades reflect the relentless effort of our teams to learn from one another, share best practices and build a culture where safe, seamless and personal care for every patient is the standard.”

Elmhurst Hospital maintained its straight-A streak in the Hospital Safety Grades, one of only 11 hospitals in the country and three in Illinois to receive an A in every grading period since the program began in spring 2012.

“Our continued recognition speaks to the consistency and compassion of our caregivers,” said Kimberley Darey, MD, President, Endeavor Health Elmhurst Hospital. “Earning straight A’s year after year doesn’t happen by chance, but because our teams show up with the same dedication and focus for every patient, no matter the circumstance.”

Endeavor Health Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park and Northwest Community Hospitals also achieved “Straight A” recognition for earning the top grade in five or more consecutive rating cycles, a distinction earned by only about 12% of hospitals nationwide.

Behind these results are hundreds of daily actions, big and small, that help keep patients safe and foster a culture of safety across the organization: nurses double-scanning medications, care teams using predictive dashboards to identify infection risk early and hospital leaders convening safety huddles seven days a week to review emerging risks and share lessons across departments. These practices, supported by an integrated, standardized reporting system and strong safety governance, reflect Endeavor Health’s belief that safety and quality are inseparable.

“Beyond the walls of our hospitals, Endeavor Health’s transitions of care, community health worker outreach and at-home recovery programs help ensure that patients experience safe, coordinated care whether in the hospital, clinic or at home. By combining data, teamwork and compassion,” added Dr. Halasyamani.

This year’s announcement marks Leapfrog’s 25th anniversary. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, awarded twice annually, is the nation’s only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. Each hospital’s grade is based on more than 30 national performance measures and is peer-reviewed, transparent, and free to the public.
