Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined. But it doesn’t have to be. With early detection, colon cancer is highly treatable—even preventable. Screening allows doctors to find and remove precancerous polyps before they become cancerous. We strongly encourage men and women to get screened and take control of their health.

Two Types of Screenings

There are two main types of colon cancer screenings:

  1. Visualization Tests – A colonoscopy is a test where a flexible tube with a camera and a light at the end of it is safely moved throughout the colon. The colonoscopy allows doctors to see inside the colon, detect abnormalities, remove polyps and prevent cancer from developing.  Another option is CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy).  This is not as readily available, but requires a colonoscopy if anything is found.
  2. Detection-Only Tests (stool-based tests) – Tests like FIT and Cologuard can identify signs of cancer, but if results are positive, a colonoscopy is still required for confirmation and treatment.

Colonoscopy: The Gold Standard in Prevention

A colonoscopy is the most effective screening method because it not only detects cancer but also removes polyps before they become cancerous. Since polyps take years to develop into cancer, removing them early can significantly lower your risk.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends regular screenings and emphasizes that while multiple options exist, the most important step is to choose one and follow through.

Addressing Concerns About Colonoscopy

Many people avoid colonoscopies due to fear of the procedure, preparation or potential complications. However, colonoscopies are extremely safe and performed every day with minimal risk.

The temporary discomfort of preparation is far outweighed by the potential to prevent a life-threatening disease. Finding cancer early—or stopping it before it starts—is far better than discovering it when treatment options are limited.

Alternatives to Colonoscopy

For those hesitant about a colonoscopy, primary care physicians can discuss alternative screening methods, including:

  • FIT Test – A stool-based test that detects hidden blood, which may indicate cancer.
  • Cologuard – A fecal DNA test that identifies genetic mutations associated with colon cancer.

While these tests are convenient, they are not preventive. A positive result still requires a colonoscopy for further evaluation and polyp removal.

Screening Saves Lives—Don’t Wait

Insurance plans often cover colonoscopies and other screening tests, making early detection accessible. Cost should not be a barrier—check with your provider to confirm coverage and take advantage of preventive benefits.

Advancements in Colon Cancer Screening

Research continues to advance, with promising developments in blood-based screening tests for colon cancer. While not yet widely available, these innovations could further improve early detection in the future.
