What is your endeavor?
This summer, my husband and I are venturing with our three children on a trip of a lifetime, a six-week stay in France. It’s a trip that’s officially been in the works for more than a year. It’s also realization on a dream to return to France, where we honeymooned 20 years ago. To prepare, I’ve been learning French through an app, Duolingo, and working on conversations in French with my three kids, who all take French at school. The app is engaging and provides fun activities to keep going; I’ve logged in consecutively for more than 290 days.
What do you like about learning French?
With these lessons being meant to support a family trip, our whole family is doing this together. We practice French together at dinner, and often, my kids text me in French — those are my tests! The Duolingo app also allows us to share milestones and quests we have accomplished, and it is wonderful to have everyone in the family engaged in learning.
How does incorporating this language learning into your day make you better at your job?
I think it’s a reminder that consistent work toward a goal can lead to success. I’ve practiced determination as a breast cancer survivor, and I keep finding goals to work toward. I’ve also taken up lap swimming and have a goal of swimming 100 miles this year. With swimming, I have found that it really helps me physically and mentally, which allows me to take care of my patients with a great attitude! Plus, I can use my experience as an example that no matter what goals you set (learning French or swimming one mile at a time), if you have the right frame of mind and support, you can achieve them!
