What is your endeavor?
For the past two years, I have been taking walks with my husband and our two Portuguese Water Dogs. Harley is 7 years old and Tippy is 5 years old. Harley was a former therapy dog and loves to be petted while Tippy is our little food thief and loves to steal food from the table when you’re not looking. For the most part, we follow a path through our neighborhood that leads to a local park with a walking path. We also love to go hiking with them and take advantage of local hiking spots like the River Walk, Whalon Park and Knoch Knolls in Naperville. But we’ve also taken them to see the Indiana Dunes, hike in the Colorado mountains and walk around the lake in Paw Paw Lake, Michigan so my dogs are pretty spoiled and get to see a lot!
What about your walks draws you?
I enjoy the walks and hikes to get some exercise and get my steps in for the day, breathe fresh air, listen to the birds chirp and connect with my husband of 24 years.
We’ve been doing about two miles every day. I should step up the ante and push myself to walk faster to get my heart rate going, but then I’d have to leave my dogs behind because they stop to smell everything along the way.
How does incorporating walks into your day make you better at your job?
These daily walks help me reduce stress by reflecting on my day, plan for the next day or simply just be in the moment. It also gives my husband and me time to coordinate anything going on with our kids or activities. Sometimes I feel like we are now the “neighborhood watch”, especially when no one else is out! These walks truly help me bring my best self to work.
