Most adults know their kids should get an annual physical with a primary care doctor as they grow.

But the checkups shouldn’t stop when they reach adulthood. In fact, regular wellness visits with a primary care doctor are essential to maintaining good health as we age.

A yearly visit with your primary care doctor will make a big difference in your health. Over time, the record of your visits will paint a picture of your overall health and allow your physician to see trends that should be addressed to prevent future disease.

An annual checkup or physical includes a few standard components, including:

  • A review of your medical and family history, health risks, height, weight and vitals. Physicians will check and record your blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and temperature. If anything seems too high, they’ll assess how to treat it.

  • Vaccinations if you’re due and bloodwork to check cholesterol and other vital numbers. Your doctor will also mention preventive screenings that apply to you, such as mammograms and colonoscopies.

  • An emotional wellbeing check-in. Mental health is as important as physical health, and they often affect each other. Your physician will ask how you’ve been feeling and whether you have any concerns about your mental health.

  • Asking you about health concerns. Your physician wants to know about any twinges, spots, aches, pains or other new symptoms that persist, so be sure to mention anything you want them to look at more closely. They’ll develop a personalized plan to address your concerns and help maintain your good health. If specialty care is needed, they can refer you to an expert.

When it comes to maintaining your health as you age, your primary care doctor is one of your greatest allies.
