Spiritual services

Our trained chaplains offer support to engage the spiritual dimension of people (their beliefs, faith, culture, values and religious practices) to foster healing, growth and wellbeing. When faced with times of stress, illness and crisis, people often draw closer to their spirituality. Support from a chaplain can play a major role in the healing process and can help patients and their loved ones through challenges associated with illness or injury. Our chaplains offer support that is respectful of each patient’s spirituality, religious beliefs, privacy and dignity.

Chaplains visit all newly admitted patients, those having surgery, critical situations and others by referral or request. Chaplains are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pastoral care offices are located on the third floor of the main building – across from the gift shop, next to the chapel.

Swedish Hospital chapel

The Swedish Hospital chapel is located on the third floor of the main building and is always open for personal prayer and meditation. Seasonal and occasional services are conducted throughout the year.

Garden of Compassion and Healing Garden

What can be more relaxing and serene than a beautiful gardens available to you at all times for spending a quiet moment of personal or family time? Take a look at our Garden of Compassion, located in front of the Anderson Pavilion, or spend some time in our Healing Garden, located along the outdoor walkway behind the Galter Medical Pavilion and the Galter LifeCenter.

Advance care planning and advance directives

Personal values and priorities, relationships, spirituality, and one’s religious tradition often influence decisions about advanced care planning and end of life care. Chaplains can be called upon to engage patients, their families, and their care team in conversations related to these issues. They assist with healthcare power of attorney documents and living wills.

Interpretive services

Our onsite Spanish medical interpreter is available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. to help patients and their families communicate with members of the health care team.

Additional interpretive services, including sign language and telephone translation of over 150 languages, are available upon request, free of charge.

To request an interpreter, ask your care provider or call (773) 878-8200, ext. 1700.

Services for the hearing impaired

Resources offered for hearing impaired patients at Swedish Hospital include:

  • Communication boards (located on all medical units)
  • Sign language interpreters via the language line on our iPad’s (iPad’s located on all medical units)
  • Pockets talkers (offered on the units)
  • Masks with clear shields over the mouth (ordered from equipment services)

To ensure that patients with impaired sensory, mobility or speaking skills have an equal opportunity to benefit from hospital services, a variety of resources and services are available. For more information, call (773) 878-8200, ext. 1700.

Our social services team comprises several highly trained and licensed social workers. Available for referrals, social workers offer counseling and a wealth of information regarding community resources for patients and families experiencing a transition in their lives.

Our social services team is guided by a biopsychosocial model. Our social workers not only look at the person, but examine the emotional, physical and social components of one's life and how the patient functions within their environment. This examination helps the social workers offer individualized services to patients.
