Depression and anxiety are not a normal part of aging. Yet nearly 20% of adults age 55 and older experience some form of mental illness (National Council on Aging, 2023). Too often, symptoms are overlooked or mistaken for other age-related concerns. Fatigue, sleep changes or physical pain may mask depression, making it harder to recognize (National Institute on Aging, 2023).
At the same time, social isolation is a growing risk. One in four adults age 65 and older report feeling lonely, which is strongly tied to depression, anxiety and cognitive decline (AARP Foundation, 2018). These challenges show why specialized care for older adults is necessary.
Introducing the Generations IOP at Hinsdale
Our Generations Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured treatment designed for adults 55 and older. Located at Endeavor Health Center – Hinsdale Behavioral Health, the program offers 12 hours of care each week on a four-day schedule, Tuesday through Friday.
Generations is Medicare-approved, making high-quality, affordable care accessible when your patients need more support than weekly therapy but do not require hospitalization (Medicare.gov, 2024).
Why specialized care matters
- Life transitions such as retirement, loss or chronic illness can disrupt emotional wellbeing (American Psychological Association, 2020)
- Stigma, transportation challenges and hearing or vision changes make access harder (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2021)
- Complex medication regimens, polypharmacy and cognitive changes complicate diagnosis and treatment
- Limited support networks heighten the risks of isolation and decline (AARP Foundation, 2018)
Generations directly addresses these barriers with therapies and supports designed specifically for older adults in your care.
A collaborative, multidisciplinary approach
Our care team includes psychiatrists, advanced practice providers, nurses, therapists, occupational therapists and expressive therapists. Together, we deliver trauma-informed, culturally responsive care that meets the emotional, cognitive and physical needs of your patients.
The program includes:
- Group therapy informed by dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- Individual therapy focused on personal goals
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
- Occupational therapy to support daily functioning, energy conservation and fall prevention
- Expressive therapies that foster identity, meaning and emotional expression
- Psychoeducation on mental health, aging and wellness
- Case management and discharge planning for continuity of care
Studies show DBT adapted for older adults reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety while improving quality of life. Expressive therapies also enhance mood, support cognitive function and encourage social connection.
Medicare & access to care
Medicare Part B covers outpatient behavioral health services, including intensive outpatient programs, therapy, psychiatric evaluations and medication management (Medicare.gov, 2024). You do not need to qualify for inpatient care to participate. If your care plan indicates a need for at least nine hours of therapy per week, Medicare may help cover IOP participation.
