Normally, as our heart pumps blood through its chambers, its valves act like little doors that open and close in sync with our heartbeat and prevent blood from flowing backwards.

When heart valves aren’t strong enough to stop the backward flow of blood, we can start to feel fatigue, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and swelling in the legs or abdomen.

Endeavor Health cardiologists have found minimally-invasive ways to treat this condition, including an exciting new procedure that focuses on a leaky tricuspid valve.

One of the Endeavor Health heart valve team’s latest areas of focus is tricuspid regurgitation — a condition where the valve that controls blood flow between the upper and lower chambers of the heart no longer functions properly.

Most recently, the Endeavor Health Cardiovascular Institute at Glenbrook Hospital successfully performed two of the first bicaval valve implants in the region as part of the TRICAV-1 clinical trial, a multicenter study evaluating the TricValve® Bicaval Valve System for patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation.

“This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to providing patients with access to the most advanced, evidence-based cardiac care available,” said Mark Ricciardi, MD, director of interventional cardiology and structural heart disease clinical and research programs at Endeavor Health. “Through groundbreaking clinical research, we are transforming the way this condition is treated.”

The TricValve system is particularly suited for high-risk patients who are not good candidates for open-heart surgery.

“Because this particular approach to treatment involves placement of valves into the large veins that lead to the heart, and not within the tricuspid valve itself, this could be an especially good option not only for those at high risk for open heart surgery but also those who are not good candidate for transcatheter valve therapies,” Dr. Ricciardi said.

The Endeavor Health Research Institute has more than 550 active clinical trials and more than 700 clinical research studies in areas ranging from cardiology, oncology, genetics and infectious disease to patient quality, safety and experience.

With the opening of the new Endeavor Heath Cardiovascular Institute at Glenbrook Hospital, patients can access cutting-edge, comprehensive heart care as well as innovative clinical trials and research in a single landing place, from diagnosis to treatment.

Clinical trials are about hope. And you can help provide that hope and advance medicine by participating in clinical trials. Your participation helps our researchers better understand how to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases and contribute to healthcare breakthroughs that can help transform lives.

You can search for clinical trials on the Endeavor Health Clinical Trials website. Search ongoing trials by category or keyword for a specific condition or diseases.
