Urinary infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bladder issues. They occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract, causing pain, urgency and other symptoms.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Lower abdominal discomfort

UTIs are typically diagnosed through urine tests and treated with targeted antibiotics. If you have recurrent infections, we offer preventive care strategies and evaluation for underlying causes like anatomical issues or bladder dysfunction.

We treat cystitis, or inflammation of the bladder, often caused by infection. We also diagnose and treat less common bladder conditions that may be related to immune disorders, interstitial cystitis, radiation cystitis and/or chronic bladder irritation.

Overactive bladder (OAB)

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a condition characterized by urinary urgency and frequency. It may occur due to bladder muscle overactivity, neurological signals or irritation. Several conditions can be commonly associated with OAB, including obesity, diabetes, bladder outlet obstruction, sleep apnea or neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis.

Symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Sudden urgency
  • Leakage before reaching the bathroom
  • Waking at night to urinate

We diagnose OAB with medical history, bladder diaries, physical examination, ultrasound and sometimes urodynamic testing. Treatment may include:

  • Behavioral strategies and pelvic floor training
  • Medications
  • Botox injections
  • Neuromodulation: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) nerve stimulation or peripheral tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS)

Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a loss of bladder control that affects millions of people of all genders and ages. It can be disruptive and distressing, but many treatment options are available.

  • Stress urinary incontinence: Leakage during activities like coughing, laughing or exercise
  • Urge urinary incontinence: Sudden urge to urinate, often caused by overactive bladder (OAB) or neurological conditions
  • Mixed urinary incontinence: A combination of stress and urge urinary incontinence
  • Overflow incontinence: Leakage due to blockage of bladder and subsequent spillage of urine
  • Nocturnal incontinence: Bedwetting

Common causes of stress incontinence in women include childbirth, menopause, pelvic surgery and aging. Treatment options include: Pelvic floor therapy, biofeedback, medications, urethral bulking agents, surgical slings and neuromodulation (like sacral neuromodulation (SNM), or peripheral tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS).

Common causes of stress incontinence in men include pelvic or prostate surgery, weakened pelvic floor or sphincter muscles, nerve damage or obstruction. Treatment options include: Behavioral therapies, medications, neuromodulation (sacral neuromodulation (SNM) nerve stimulation or peripheral tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS), slings and artificial urinary sphincter placement.
