Common spine conditions

Back and neck pain

Chronic or acute pain that affects mobility and daily activities.

Cervical and lumbar disorders

Conditions affecting the vertebrae in the neck and lower back.

Degenerative spine disease

Arthritic conditions that impact the discs and joints of the spine.

Disc herniation and disease

Bulging or ruptured discs that put pressure on spinal nerves.

Foot drop

Inability to lift the front part of the foot is a symptom of underlying issues and can be a red flag for neurological problems such as spine issues, nerve compression/damage or muscle disorders (like muscular dystrophy).

Kyphosis

A condition in which the spine curves forward significantly (rounded back) causing back pain, reduced flexibility and difficulty breathing in severe cases. There are a variety of causes, including poor posture, muscle imbalances, abnormalities in spine structure, and osteoporosis, among others.

Myelopathy

Symptomatic compression of the spinal cord, usually in the neck or middle back, which can lead to pain, weakness and loss of function in the arms and legs

Neurogenic Claudication

Compression or nerve irritation in the lower back due to spinal stenosis or herniated discs that causes leg pain or weakness while walking.

Radiculopathy

Nerve pain down the extremity or down the thorax caused by compression or irritation of a nerve root, usually in the neck or low back.

Sciatica

Pain radiating from the lower back down the leg due to nerve compression.

Scoliosis

An abnormal spine curvature that appears as an S- or C- shape (side-to-side) leading to uneven posture that can affect other parts of the body such as the hips, shoulders and ribs, and can range from mild to severe.

Spinal stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause pain, numbness and weakness due to compression of the underlying nerves.

Nerve-related conditions

Peripheral neuropathy

Damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, leading to pain, numbness and weakness.

Radiculopathy

A condition where a compressed nerve root causes pain, tingling or weakness.

Spinal cord compression

ressure on the spinal cord that may lead to loss of function.

Spine injuries and deformities

Scoliosis

An abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that can range from mild to severe and can affect adults as well as children.

Pediatric scoliosis

Specialized scoliosis treatment tailored for growing children and adolescents.

Spinal deformity

Structural abnormalities in the spine that may require corrective treatment.

Spinal trauma and fractures

Injuries caused by accidents, falls or other trauma affecting spinal stability.

Sports-related spine injuries

Injuries affecting the spine due to high-impact or repetitive movements in sports.

Other disorders that can affect the spine

Autoimmune disorders

Can cause inflammation and pain in various parts of the body that can also affect joints in the spine, along with the peripheral nervous system. These conditions can include lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Connective tissue disorders

Typically genetic, they affect connective tissues throughout the body, including the spine, leading to joint hypermobility and pain.

Bone and joint conditions

Osteoporosis weakens bones making them more susceptible to fractures while osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that can affect the spine, causing pain and stiffness.

Other conditions

Certain disorders create referred back pain, which may be mistaken for a musculoskeletal problem. Others, such as gout, can affect the spine, causing pain and inflammation, while fibromyalgia causes widespread fatigue and pain in the back and neck.

Tumors

Spinal tumors can be either primary (originating in the spine) or metastatic (spreading from other parts of the body). They can cause pain and may press on nearby nerves or the spinal cord, leading to weakness, numbness or other neurological symptoms.
