Understanding your care journey

Getting ready for surgery can feel like a lot, but you are not alone. We have classes and guidebooks to help you learn about your surgery and what to do before and after. These will explain your appointments, what happens at the hospital, and how to get better at home.

Before surgery, you may attend a class or meet with your care team for final instructions. After surgery, a team of specialists will help you with pain control, moving and recovery.

Your recovery and what to expect

Recovering from joint surgery usually has a few steps. You might stay in the hospital for a short time, then get therapy at home or at a clinic. Your recovery plan will include managing pain, reaching movement goals, and follow-up care.

Most patients stay in the hospital for 2–3 days, then transition to home care or a short-term rehab facility. Physical therapy usually starts the same day as surgery or the day after.

Our rehabilitation team includes physical and occupational therapists who guide you through exercises and mobility training to safely regain strength and independence.

Different types of pain relief are used to keep you comfortable without depending on strong pain medicine, like narcotics, for a long time.

Pre-surgery classes and registration

Patients scheduled for hip, knee or spine surgery are encouraged to attend a pre-operative class. These sessions help you understand what to expect and offer a chance to ask questions. For spine surgery related information, please visit our Spine Center.
