At Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital, mothers labor, deliver and recover all in one room, and newborns room with their parents. We encourage you to keep your baby with you for bonding. If your baby is stable, he/she may stay with you after the delivery. Your baby will receive all necessary care at the bedside.

Our “mother-baby nursing care” model means that one nurse provides care for both you and your baby. It allows the nurse to support you in learning how to care for yourself and your baby. We want you to feel comfortable and confident when you take your baby home. Should you need time to rest, our trained nurses can care for your infant in our newborn nursery.

For term and near term infants who need a longer stay or special care for feeding or medications, our level II special care nursery is staffed with dedicated nurses specially trained in neonatal care and our pediatric hospitalists are present 24/7 with ability to nimbly activate our neonatologist team for escalation of care.

In general, care in our ICN is usually limited to newborn infants who are more than 32 weeks gestational age and weigh more than 1,500 grams at birth, or who are recovering from serious illness treated in a Level III NICU. Newborns who are seriously ill may be transferred to a facility with a Level III NICU.

Levels of newborn care

Levels vary by hospital location - please see details for the hospital near you.

We offer state-of-the-art newborn care, from essential routine care to advanced neonatal services for newborns who need extra care due to prematurity, low birth weight, surgical needs or congenital conditions.

Our neonatal transport teams are available 24/7 with a dedicated ambulance to transfer high-risk mothers and newborns needing an advanced level of neonatal care to one of our NICU level hospitals. The team includes a neonatologist, labor and delivery nurses and a respiratory therapist.

This level provides routine care for healthy newborns. Services include newborn assessment, feeding support, and basic medical care.

In Endeavor Health hospitals offering private mother-baby rooms, you and your baby may stay together for your entire recovery time, which helps you adjust to your baby’s cues and patterns and enhances early bonding. If you need to rest, our nurses can care for your baby in the newborn nursery to give you time on your own.

This level provides a high level of care for babies born prematurely or with mild health problems. Services include close monitoring, IV fluids, oxygen support and specialized care.

This level includes highly specialized care for very sick or premature infants. Neonatologists are available 24/7 for any urgent concerns that might arise. Multi-specialty services include mechanical ventilation, advanced imaging, surgery, pharmacy, feeding therapy, nutritional support and developmental occupational therapy. All of these services support the growing newborn, preparing them to safely transition from hospital to home.

An ISCU is a NICU that also cares for infants when they need to be readmitted after going home.

Additional newborn care includes Intermediate and Special Care Nurseries, lactation and feeding support, and developmental follow-up programs to support growth through the toddler years. These services are available across several Endeavor Health hospitals.
