Understanding breast cancer

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast tissue grow uncontrollably. Risk factors can include age, family history, genetic mutations, hormonal influences and lifestyle factors. Every diagnosis is unique, and so is every care plan we create.

Common symptoms of breast cancer
  • A new lump in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Skin dimpling or irritation
  • Nipple discharge, other than breast milk

Breast cancer diagnosis and testing

Used to evaluate abnormalities detected on a mammogram or physical exam, including Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) for dense breast tissue and to further screen high risk patients.

Recommended to clarify inconclusive imaging results and to thoroughly screen high risk patients.

Genetic counseling and testing through the Center for Medical Genetics can help identify inherited risk for breast cancer. This information supports early detection strategies for patients and their families.

Advanced testing on tumor tissue helps identify specific molecular markers that guide prognosis and inform the most effective treatment options for a person’s unique cancer.

Minimally invasive techniques — including stereotactic, 3D, ultrasound-guided and MRI-guided biopsy — provide fast, accurate diagnoses.

Breast cancer treatment options

Options include lumpectomy, mastectomy, skin- and nipple-sparing techniques, and breast reconstruction.

Precision-targeted radiation to eliminate cancer cells while preserving healthy tissue. Radiation therapy utilizes multiple technologies to deliver optimal treatments for breast cancer, including:

  • Partial Breast Radiation
  • IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy)
  • IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy)
  • 3D Conformal Technique
