Overview

Surgery plays a central role in many cancer treatment plans. Whether the goal is to remove a tumor, stage cancer, or relieve symptoms, surgical procedures are often part of a broader care strategy. At Endeavor Health, our cancer surgeons use the latest techniques — including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted options — to remove cancer safely, preserve function and reduce recovery time.

Types of advanced surgical procedures

Minimally invasive surgery

These techniques use small incisions and tools, such as a hepatic pump, laparoscope or endoscope, to remove tumors with less trauma, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.

Robotic-assisted surgery

Surgeons use robotic platforms like the da Vinci® Xi system for enhanced precision, improved visualization, and better preservation of surrounding structures, especially in prostate, colorectal and gynecologic surgeries.

Open surgery

In some cases, a traditional open approach provides the safest or most effective option, particularly for large or complex tumors that require full visibility and access.

HIPEC/PIPAC

After surgical removal of visible tumors, chemotherapy is delivered directly to the abdominal cavity — HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) uses a heated solution, while PIPAC (pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy) delivers it as a pressurized aerosol to target microscopic cancer cells.

Isolated limb infusion

Used for advanced skin or soft tissue cancers in a limb, this procedure delivers high-dose chemotherapy directly to the affected arm or leg while sparing the rest of the body.

NanoKnife® / IRE (irreversible electroporation)

This minimally invasive, nonthermal technique uses electrical pulses to destroy tumors while avoiding damage to nearby blood vessels or sensitive structures — ideal for tumors in difficult locations.

Clinical trials

We participate in clinical trials evaluating new surgical techniques, treatment combinations and postsurgical recovery protocols. If a surgical study is appropriate for you, your care team will discuss it as part of your treatment planning.
