Understanding liver cancer

Liver cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the liver that may develop as a primary cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC) or result from tumors that have spread from other parts of the body (metastatic cancer).

Risk factors include:

  • Chronic hepatitis B or C infection
  • Cirrhosis or chronic liver disease
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Tobacco use
  • Family history of liver cancer

Because symptoms often appear late, early diagnosis is key for successful treatment.

Symptoms of liver cancer

Liver cancer symptoms may include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling full after small meals
  • Abdominal swelling or pain (especially on the right side)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Fatigue or weakness

Liver cancer treatment and therapies

For localized disease, our surgeons perform liver resection to remove part of the liver. When appropriate, we use advanced techniques such as robotic-assisted surgery to enhance precision and minimize recovery time. Transplant may be considered in certain cases.

We offer techniques like radiofrequency ablation or Y-90 radioembolization to destroy tumors without major surgery.
