Liver cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the liver that may develop as a primary cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC) or result from tumors that have spread from other parts of the body (metastatic cancer).
Risk factors include:
- Chronic hepatitis B or C infection
- Cirrhosis or chronic liver disease
- Heavy alcohol use
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- Tobacco use
- Family history of liver cancer
Because symptoms often appear late, early diagnosis is key for successful treatment.
Liver cancer symptoms may include:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling full after small meals
- Abdominal swelling or pain (especially on the right side)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- Fatigue or weakness
If you have these symptoms — especially if you are at increased risk — ask your doctor about screening.
Liver cancer treatment and therapies
For localized disease, our surgeons perform liver resection to remove part of the liver. When appropriate, we use advanced techniques such as robotic-assisted surgery to enhance precision and minimize recovery time. Transplant may be considered in certain cases.
We offer techniques like radiofrequency ablation or Y-90 radioembolization to destroy tumors without major surgery.
Our experts use high-precision techniques to target cancer cells when surgery isn’t an option.
Your care team may use chemotherapy, immunotherapy and/or targeted drugs, depending on the stage and tumor biology.
Our experts are skilled in catheter-based techniques, which deliver treatment directly to the liver with fewer side effects.
Liver cancer tests and screenings
Patients with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis may require regular liver cancer screenings. Routine surveillance can help detect liver cancer earlier, when it is most treatable. We offer:
Used to detect tumors or abnormalities
Provide detailed images of the liver and surrounding tissue
Check for liver function and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a tumor marker
Confirms diagnosis and informs treatment
