What is a headache?

There are many different types of headaches that can cause head, face, or neck pain. Some headaches may be related to other underlying conditions (secondary headaches), and some are due to a primary headache disorder. Different types of headaches require different approaches.

What is a migraine?

Migraines cause intense pain and are accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, sensitivity to light or sound and visual disturbances. Sometimes other neurologic symptoms can occur such as numbness/tingling, weakness, or speech issues. Migraines can be debilitating and drastically affect your ability to perform daily activities. They can be infrequent, just a few times per year, or can be a chronic condition.

Our team will work with you to identify what you’re experiencing and create a treatment plan that works for you.

Types of headaches we treat

Tension headaches

Often triggered by stress, fatigue or muscle strain, it may feel like a tight band is around your head. These are the most common types of headache.

Trigeminal autonomic cephalgia

Painful headaches that typically occur on one side of the head and are associated with other symptoms such as watery eyes and runny nose.

Cluster headaches

These headaches are extremely painful, typically occur on one side of the head, and come in clusters over several weeks or months.

Cervicogenic headaches

Stemming from the neck, such as joint or muscle problems, pain from these issues radiates to the head.

Migraine

Severe headaches, usually one-sided, often accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity and visual disturbances.

Diagnostic tests & screenings

What’s causing your headaches or migraines? How are they affecting your life? We start by exploring your medical history and other medical conditions that may play a role. Our team may conduct a range of assessments to get to the root of the issue, including:

  • Imaging tests: MRI or CT scan
  • A complete physical and neurological exam: Including medical history
  • Blood work: To rule out other treatable conditions that can contribute to headaches

What to expect in headache and migraine care

Our approach to treating migraines and headaches includes a combination of medication, lifestyle changes and therapies designed to help reduce frequency and severity.

Depending on the type and severity of your headaches or migraines, we may prescribe pain relievers, anti-nausea medications, migraine-specific pain relievers to block pain pathways in the brain, or preventive medications that reduce the frequency of migraines.

  • Self-administered monthly injectable medications: These are CGRP receptor antibodies, which represent the most recent addition to the treatment of migraine headaches. They help reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.
  • Triptans: Oral medications are often used as a first line of defense to stop a migraine attack.
Oral preventive medications: These include blood pressure, anti-epileptic, antidepressant, or CGRP antagonist medications, reducing the frequency and/or severity of migraines and other headaches.
  • Injections and nerve blocks: These may include trigger point injections, Botox injections for chronic migraines, occipital nerve blocks for occipital neuralgia, and sphenopalatine ganglion blocks.

We work with you to identify triggers, such as stress, dehydration or sleep patterns, and develop strategies to avoid them. This may include maintaining a regular sleep schedule, staying properly hydrated, and managing stress through relaxation techniques.

Non-medication therapies can be highly effective. We offer physical therapy to address muscle tension, particularly for tension-type or cervicogenic headaches. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help manage stress and pain perception.

Our inpatient program provides hospital-based care for severe or treatment-resistant headaches. Patients receive intensive medication management, daily skill-building and therapies, and guidance on coping strategies and triggers. You’ll leave with a personalized plan and resources to continue progress at home.
