Plus, our active involvement in research provides you with access to the latest advances in cerebrovascular care.
A stroke occurs from either a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Without prompt treatment, stroke can cause permanent brain damage, disability or death.
Signs & symptoms (BE FAST)
Recognizing stroke symptoms early can save lives. Use the BE FAST acronym to identify warning signs:
- Balance – Sudden loss of balance or coordination
- Eyes – Blurred or double vision, or sudden vision loss
- Face – One side of the face droops when smiling
- Arms – Weakness or numbness in one arm
- Speech – Slurred speech or difficulty speaking
- Time – Call 911 immediately if you notice these signs
Conditions we treat
We treat a wide range of stroke and cerebrovascular conditions that impair blood flow to the brain, including:
Often called a mini stroke, a TIA is a warning sign of a future stroke. Early diagnosis and intervention are key to reducing your risk.
Caused by blocked or narrowed arteries, ischemic stroke is treated through clot-busting medications or minimally invasive procedures to remove the blockage.
Resulting from ruptured blood vessels, hemorrhagic stroke requires specialized care and can include surgical interventions to stop bleeding, and repair of damaged vessels, such as minimally invasive removal of the blood clot and drain placement.
A bulge in a blood vessel that can rupture leading to hemorrhagic stroke that is treated with advanced endovascular techniques or open surgery.
An abnormal tangle of blood vessels that can rupture and cause hemorrhagic stroke that is often treated with a combination of surgical, endovascular, or radiation procedures.
An abnormal connection between blood vessels that can bleed, often requiring further workup and evaluation with endovascular or open surgical treatment.
Narrowing of brain blood vessels that can result in a stroke that often requires medication or treatment with bypass surgery.
Narrowing of the carotid arteries, often treated with stenting or removal of the blockage and lining of an artery to restore blood flow and prevent stroke.
A blood clot in the brain’s venous system, treated through blood thinner medication or endovascular clot removal.
Tears in the blood vessel wall, treated with medication and occasionally with endovascular procedures such as stents to prevent complications.
A rhythmic sound in the ear often caused by cerebrovascular conditions and treated with targeted interventions.
A collection of blood between the lining of the brain that is treated with surgical evaluation and endovascular embolization.
Advanced diagnostics and treatments
From the moment you arrive, our stroke team is prepared to act quickly with the latest diagnostic tools and treatments, including:
Advanced MRI, CT scans and angiograms to identify blood vessel abnormalities that can cause blockages or bleeding.
Thrombolytics, like Tenecteplase (TNK), are used to dissolve clots during ischemic strokes for patients meeting certain criteria.
Intra-arterial clot removal and stenting for ischemic stroke and coiling, setting, or clipping for hemorrhagic stroke and aneurysms.
Open surgeries for complex cases, including bypass or aneurysm repairs.
Endeavor Health Neurosciences Institute provides the highest level of subspecialty scans and interpretations for brain, spine and head/neck neuroradiological examinations to provide an accurate diagnosis and next steps. Our advanced screenings tools include: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and nuclear medicine studies.
Depending on your medical history, family history and personal risk for stroke and heart disease, you and your physician may determine that you should undergo one or more noninvasive screening exams, such as:
- Carotid artery disease (CAD) screening: This test uses ultrasound imaging to identify signs of CAD by evaluating blood flow.
- Peripheral artery disease (PAD) screening: This simple assessment uses the resting ankle-brachial index (ABI) to determine your potential risk for PAD.
- Abdominal aorta ultrasound: This ultrasound of the largest blood vessel in your body screens for an aneurysm.
Some of our locations offer a combination of these screenings in one visit to help identify your risk for stroke and heart disease. Because each patient has a unique risk, ask your Endeavor Health Medical Group physician or other healthcare professional which screenings you need and when you should begin making them part of your wellness checkup.
Endeavor Health is proud to be a leader in stroke and cerebrovascular care. Our locations offer 24/7 access to expert stroke teams, advanced imaging and minimally invasive procedures to ensure timely, effective care. With a focus on collaboration, we provide a seamless transition from emergency care to rehabilitation and beyond.
Our neurocritical care units, located in Arlington Heights, Evanston and Naperville, are staffed by neurointensivists — physicians who specialize in the care of patients with complex neurological needs — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
