Concussions and traumatic brain injury (TBI) vary in severity and can improve in as little as a few days, or result in more permanent challenges in memory, movement and pain. Whether the brain injury is sports-related or caused by an accident or a fall, our multidisciplinary team at Endeavor Health Neurosciences Institute is here to help you resolve symptoms and return to your desired activities.
Our team of neurologists will work closely with you to help you understand your unique injury, identify factors that may influence your recovery timeline, and provide expert knowledge on up-to-date approaches to treatment. Every injury is treated with expertise, compassion and a personalized approach. From diagnosis to rehabilitation, we’re by your side, designing a treatment plan that fosters healing and resilience.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that results in temporary dysfunction of the brain. It can occur after a significant hit to the body or to the head. Common symptoms may include:
- Memory and attention difficulties
- Blurry vision
- Imbalance
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Sensitivity to light or sound
- Fatigue
More significant traumatic injuries may be classified as moderate or severe traumatic brain injuries based on how long someone was unconscious, how long any (or their) memory gap is, and if there is any bleeding in or around the brain or broken bones in the skull. Higher-level injuries may have more significant symptoms, may take longer to recover from, and may have lasting impairments such as difficulty walking, difficulty talking and/or problems with thinking or memory. Our neurology team will work closely with you to understand the unique effects of your injury, and to develop a custom plan to restore function and enhance recovery.
A concussion or head injury diagnosis can be challenging as most concussions do not result in loss of consciousness or being “knocked out,” and other concussion symptoms, such as dehydration, migraine headache and neck strain, can occur in other common situations. Also, concussions may not be immediately evident after a head injury; symptoms may evolve over the course of several hours or days.
Obtaining a thorough assessment from a trained concussion expert can help you receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment as early as possible. Many concussions resolve with appropriate rest and treatment. Research indicates that seeing an experienced concussion expert can help speed recovery and get you back to participating in normal day-to-day functions, as well as higher level activities, as soon as possible.
At Endeavor Health, we will start with a thorough review of your medical history and discuss the specifics of your injury. Our evaluation may include:
- Consultation with a provider skilled in concussion care
- Neurological assessments: Tests for memory, coordination, balance and other cognitive and physical skills.
- Discussion of return to work or school and any modifications or accommodations needed
- Discussion of return to exercise or athletics if applicable
- Comprehensive Concussion Clinic: Some patients may be offered an appointment for a comprehensive concussion assessment, during which the physician may add exercise testing as well as a physical therapist evaluation in a single visit. This type of assessment is currently only available at our Glenbrook campus.
- Additional referrals, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology or psychiatry, optometry, neuropsychology and others, as needed
- Additional brain or neck imaging, such as MRI or CT
Endeavor Health’s concussion experts are fellowship-trained sports neurologists with additional expertise in athletics. These concussion leaders serve as consultants and team physicians for professional and collegiate Chicago sports teams, lending many years of experience to their evaluations.
Under this direction, we’ve created a Comprehensive Concussion Program for selected or requesting athletes to undergo a more thorough evaluation. The evaluation includes a sports neurologist consultation and exercise testing in our Concussion Lab and an evaluation by a concussion and vestibular-trained physical therapist.
The Concussion Lab is equipped with cardio and agility equipment, heart rate monitoring software and vestibular testing technology that allows for a deeper evaluation of the state of injury recovery, as well as contributing factors, such as neck strain, eye tracking difficulties, heart rate abnormalities and more. The entire assessment is done in one visit to allow for collaborative diagnostic and treatment planning.
Following initial assessment, we’ll focus on how to get the athlete safely back to their sport by overseeing a return-to-play process, or collaborating with the team or league’s athletic trainer to accomplish a graduated return to exercise. Risk and benefit discussions regarding the athlete’s brain health and concussion history ensure the athlete, their family members, and their sports team feel comfortable with return-to-play decisions.
Personalized care to support brain injury recovery
Recovery from a TBI or concussion often involves a variety of approaches that are individualized based on symptoms and injury. Treatment may involve:
Counseling on gradual return to normal daily activities, but taking rest breaks when needed and providing accommodations for places like school or work.
Physical, occupational and speech therapies to rebuild strength, enhance cognitive skills and improve mobility.
Physical exercise has been shown to aid in recovery when started early and at a level that does not exacerbate symptoms. This should not be started without direction from a medical provider.
Medications may help manage symptoms like pain, muscle stiffness or mood changes.
Techniques to address trauma or emotional and behavioral changes that sometimes follow brain injuries.
Long-term brain health
The timeline for recovery from concussion can vary widely and some individuals may experience concussion symptoms for many weeks or even months. This is referred to as post-concussion syndrome. Many patients with prolonged symptoms will require multidisciplinary care, and an evaluation through a highly experienced concussion provider is the perfect place to start.
Some athletes, particularly those who have had high rates of past exposures to head trauma, such as retired contact athletes like football players, may have questions regarding the state of their neurologic health or if current symptoms might be due to past history of head trauma (e.g., traumatic encephalopathy syndrome or chronic traumatic encephalopathy). A neurologic assessment helps us understand what’s causing the symptoms and if they’re due to prior head injuries, before testing and treatment.

Endeavor Health has led the way in concussion management for years, with nationally recognized experts in brain injury. Our experts assess and treat athletes at all levels — from professional and collegiate, to high school and youth sports. We work closely with their team's athletic training and medical staff to determine when athletes are safely able to return to their sports activities for practice and/or competitive play after a concussion. Endeavor Health also has leading experts in TBI research who participate in clinical trials related to TBI and concussion, including trials for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
