Neuromuscular care requires effective treatment combined with compassionate support. At Endeavor Health, we are pioneers of neuromuscular treatments and have access to the most advanced care available.
Neuromuscular conditions affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles, the communication between nerves and muscles, as well as the muscles themselves. These conditions can lead to muscle weakness, numbness, cramps, pain, and/or an impairment in balance. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to helping individuals manage symptoms and maintain the best possible quality of life.
Types of neuromuscular disorders we treat
The most well-known disease in this category is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is a progressive condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to the loss of muscle control.
A broad group of conditions characterized by progressive muscle weakness and degeneration. Some myopathies result from systemic processes or genetic mutations.
Usually autoimmune disorders that result in weakness of the voluntary muscles, often causing difficulty with eye movement, swallowing, breathing and limb weakness.
A condition affecting the peripheral nerves, causing symptoms such as tingling, numbness and weakness, typically in the hands and feet.
A type of polyneuropathy that causes weakness of the limbs due to chronic immune system attacks on the nerves.
A group of conditions that affect the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion and temperature regulation.
Diagnosing neuromuscular disorders requires a comprehensive evaluation. Some common tests our team performs include:
- Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies: These tests assess the electrical activity of muscles and nerves, helping to determine nerve or muscle damage.
- Blood tests: Used to identify genetic markers, inflammation or autoimmune conditions that may be contributing to symptoms.
Treatment options for neuromuscular disorders
Treatment for neuromuscular disorders focuses on managing symptoms, slowing or halting disease progression, and improving quality of life.
Depending on the specific condition, medications may be used to reduce muscle spasms, manage pain, or slow disease progression. In some cases, condition-specific immune system treatments may be necessary. Certain conditions, such as CIDP and myasthenia gravis, may require immunosuppressant treatments.
Helps patients improve mobility, maintain muscle strength and manage fatigue.
Provides strategies to adapt to physical limitations and assist with daily activities.
Mobility aids, such as braces, walkers or wheelchairs, can help patients maintain independence and improve mobility.
The Endeavor Health ALS Clinic is a multidisciplinary program that brings together neurology, physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST), respiratory care and ALS United. This coordinated approach provides people with ALS access to comprehensive care in one setting, helping reduce travel and ease the burden on patients and families.
Referrals to the ALS Clinic may be made by internal or external providers or directly by a patient’s neurologist. Care begins with an initial visit in the Neuromuscular program, followed by an internal referral to the ALS Clinic. Call (847) 570-2570 for more information.

Clinical trials and research
Endeavor Health is committed to advancing the understanding and treatment of neuromuscular disorders through clinical trials and research initiatives. Our patients have access to the latest innovations in treatment, and we actively participate in research to help find new and more effective therapies.
Frequently asked questions
Neuromuscular disorders are conditions that affect the nerves and muscles, leading to symptoms like muscle weakness, numbness, cramps, pain, and an impairment in balance.
Diagnosis often involves tests like electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies, as well as blood tests to determine nerve or muscle damage and identify underlying causes.
Many neuromuscular disorders cannot be cured, but treatment can help patients manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life.
Treatment may include medications, physical and occupational therapy, assistive devices, and, in some cases, participation in clinical trials for new therapies.
Physical therapy can help patients maintain muscle strength, improve mobility and manage symptoms like pain and fatigue.
