An overview of cardiac devices

Cardiac devices are powerful tools that support the heart in managing rhythms, improving blood flow and helping prevent complications from serious heart conditions. These devices — ranging from pacemakers to ventricular assist devices — can be life-changing for patients who have serious risk factors and symptoms that interfere with their quality of life.

Types of cardiac devices

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD)

An LVAD is a mechanical pump that supports your left ventricle, helping circulate blood when the heart struggles to keep up. LVADs are often recommended for patients with advanced heart failure—whether as a bridge to a transplant or as a long-term solution.

Ventricular assist device (VAD)

VADs assist both the left and right sides of the heart, offering powerful support for weakened heart muscles and improving blood circulation throughout the body. They can be temporary or permanent and are placed surgically, or sometimes through a catheter in the leg artery or vein.

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)

This device monitors heart rhythms, automatically delivering a shock to restore normal rhythm when life-threatening arrhythmias occur.

Pacemaker

If your heart beats too slowly or irregularly, a pacemaker may be implanted to keep your heartbeat steady—helping you avoid symptoms like dizziness and fatigue.

Specialized procedures for device management and support

In addition to device implantation, Endeavor Health provides specialized procedures for managing unique cardiac needs.

Lead management and extraction

Over time, device leads — the wires connecting devices to your heart — may need repair or removal. Our electrophysiology team is skilled in lead management and extraction, keeping your device performing optimally.

Left atrial appendage (LAA) closure

For patients with atrial fibrillation, LAA closure reduces stroke risk by sealing off an area of the heart where clots often form.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD) closure

These procedures close small openings in the heart’s walls, reducing stroke risk and ensuring blood flow stays on the right path.

What to expect
  • Before the procedure: Your provider will review your health history and run any necessary tests to determine which device best supports your needs — whether that’s an LVAD, VAD, ICD or pacemaker.
  • During the procedure: Most cardiac devices are implanted through a small incision under local anesthesia. Your provider will carefully position the device and, if needed, anchor any leads to ensure it functions correctly.
  • After the procedure: Patients typically go home the same day or within 24 hours. Your care team will provide instructions for recovery, including guidelines on activity levels and caring for your incision. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor the device’s performance
