The Advanced GI MIS, Bariatric, Comprehensive Flexible Endoscopy, Foregut Fellowship at Endeavor Health is a one-year, Fellowship Council–accredited program that equips future academic leaders in gastrointestinal surgery with expertise in advanced minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. Fellows benefit from state-of-the-art simulation, rigorous research opportunities and an unparalleled clinical experience.
This intensive 12-month program runs from August 1 to July 31. Fellows develop deep proficiency in advanced laparoscopic, robotic and flexible endoscopic techniques and graduate with exceptional competence in operative and non-operative management of complex gastrointestinal, bariatric and foregut diseases.
The program emphasizes:
- Comprehensive clinical training across MIS, bariatric, foregut and advanced endoscopic procedures
- Active participation in basic and clinical research
- Robust interdisciplinary engagement with GI oncology, bariatrics and esophageal disease teams
- Immersive simulation training and teaching opportunities
Program structure & curriculum
Fellows will participate in over 400 advanced procedures, including:
- Bariatrics: ESG, Roux-en-Y, sleeve gastrectomy, revisions/conversions
- Foregut/Advanced GI: reflux surgery, achalasia, MALS, bile duct exploration
- Flexible endoscopy: POEM, ESD, EMR, anti-reflux mucosectomy, stenting, RFA
- Design and execute research projects (basic science and clinical)
- Present at national symposia
- Attend weekly MIS Research Meetings, monthly Journal Club and multidisciplinary conferences
- Teach residents and medical students in the GCSI simulation lab
- Co-direct simulation-based continuing education
- Oversee general surgery services at Endeavor’s Community Health Center
- Weekly Morbidity & Mortality Conference
- Weekly Grand Rounds
- Multidisciplinary GI and Esophageal Conferences
- Bariatric team meetings and support groups
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency
- Eligibility for medical licensure in Illinois

Training occurs at Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital and its state-of-the-art Grainger Center for Simulation and Innovation (GCSI), a 16,000 sq ft surgical education facility.
