About the program

The Postdoctoral Residency in Clinical Neuropsychology offers advanced training in adult and pediatric tracks, preparing residents for careers in neuropsychological assessment, consultation and clinical practice. The program adheres to APPCN guidelines and fosters both academic and practical excellence.

Residents choose between two specialized tracks:

  • Adult neuropsychology: Within the adult track, patient populations include young to elderly adults and diverse psychiatric and neurological outpatients, including traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and various other brain disorders and psychiatric conditions. Additional opportunities include performing the Wada test and involvement in intraoperative language mapping during brain surgery. Forensic neuropsychological evaluations related to civil litigation constitute a portion of the referrals in which residents participate.
  • Pediatric neuropsychology: Within the pediatric track, patient populations include infants, preschool children, school-aged children and young adults with diverse neurodevelopmental, neurological, medical and psychiatric concerns including genetic and congenital disorders, prematurity and birth injury, epilepsy, cancer, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities and head injury. Residents also often have the possibility of participating in school-based services (e.g., IEP meetings).

The program follows the Houston Conference guidelines and is designed to help residents qualify for board certification through the ABPP. Referral sources for the adult and pediatric neuropsychologists within the neuropsychology service include pediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, internists, physiatrists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, attorneys, insurance carriers, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, educational specialists and families. The program emphasizes supervision, mentorship and real-world clinical exposure.
