Our Emergency Medicine Residency Program prepares future community-based leaders through hands-on experience, innovative community service and comprehensive academic training in a diverse urban environment.

About the program

The Swedish Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a four-year, ACGME-accredited program based in Chicago. Our mission is to train community-based emergency medicine physician leaders with a strong foundation in evidence-based and social medicine.

Residents benefit from an exceptionally diverse patient population across Swedish and St. Bernard Hospitals, gaining exposure to a wide array of clinical pathologies and community health challenges. Each resident also designs and executes a community outreach project, embedding service deeply into the program’s core.

Message from our director

We are a four-year program, located in the great city of Chicago, making it an ideal place to train in an urban community center.  Our mission is to train community-based, emergency medicine physician leaders with an emphasis on evidence-based and social medicine. One of the many things that makes us unique is that each resident class works together to design, implement and measure the outcome of a community service project, which not only aids in the medical needs of our extremely diverse community, but also allows us to understand our patient population better. We look forward to sharing more information about our program with you.
