The University of Chicago (Endeavor Health – NorthShore Hospitals) General Psychiatry Residency Program provides comprehensive psychiatric training in a leading healthcare setting. Based at Evanston and Swedish Hospitals, our four-year, ACGME-accredited program emphasizes clinical excellence, compassion and preparedness for modern psychiatric practice.

Our program is sponsored by our academic partner, the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

About the program

The University of Chicago (Endeavor Health – NorthShore Hospitals) General Psychiatry Residency Program combines strong academic training with extensive clinical experience. Residents rotate through multiple Endeavor Health hospitals and behavioral health centers, working with a diverse patient population that includes urban and underserved communities. Training spans inpatient, consultation, emergency, and ambulatory settings so residents graduate ready for modern psychiatric practice.

Program highlights include:

  • Full exposure to subspecialties such as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry, and Women’s Mental Health, with experiences that include collaborative care, community psychiatry, Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs, and a Sleep Medicine rotation.
  • A neuromodulation experience that introduces evaluation and delivery of electroconvulsive therapy and deep transcranial magnetic stimulation under close supervision, complemented by didactics that cover indications, safety, and systems of care.
  • A robust, protected didactic curriculum integrated across all PGY years that includes Psychopharmacology and Psychopathology, Emergency Psychiatry, Interviewing, PRITE review, Grand Rounds, Journal Club, M&M, and structured psychotherapy training in CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, DBT, and family and group modalities.
  • Progressive outpatient immersion, including a bridging continuity clinic early in training, a fully outpatient PGY-3 year with dedicated clinics in collaborative care, women’s mental health, PHP/IOP, and community psychiatry, and senior leadership roles in PGY-4.
  • Mentored scholarship and systems improvement through required research literacy and quality improvement coursework, with expectation of a resident-driven QI project and scholarly activity.
  • Training across Evanston Hospital, Swedish Hospital, Highland Park, Glenbrook, Skokie, the Endeavor Health Center – Evanston Behavioral Health and Endeavor Health Medical Group clinics clustered within a short drive of Evanston, providing breadth of pathology and continuity of care.
  • A small-cohort, high-touch learning environment with four residents per year for a total of 16, ensuring close faculty engagement and an explicit focus on resident well-being, including scheduled vacation and community-building activities.

Program structure & curriculum

The first year totals four months of medicine and neurology, six months of psychiatry, and two months of primary care. Residents complete two months of internal medicine, two months of primary care medicine, and two months of neurology. Psychiatry rotations include three months of inpatient psychiatry and three months on the emergency psychiatric service and psychiatric urgent care. Half of the class begins the year on medicine and neurology then transitions to psychiatry in January, while the other half follows the reverse sequence. Up to one month of neurology may be fulfilled by pediatric neurology.

Residents complete three months of consultation liaison psychiatry, three months of inpatient psychiatry, and three months of inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry. The remaining three months are in addiction psychiatry at the Chapman Center, paired with emergency psychiatric service and psychiatric urgent care. Residents maintain about 10% outpatient continuity through Endeavor Health Medical Group during the year.

Training is fully outpatient. Mornings cover collaborative care, women's mental health, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, and community psychiatry. Afternoons are dedicated to the continuity clinic. Embedded experiences include about 1.2 month FTE of geriatric psychiatry and about 1.2 month FTE of child and adolescent psychiatry, along with continuity care and a focused sleep medicine rotation. Clinical activity spans sites at Evanston Hospital, Swedish Hospital and Endeavor Health Medical Group.

Residents spend three months on inpatient psychiatry with chief responsibilities and three months on inpatient consultation liaison as chief. You will also complete three months in neuromodulation, including ECT and dTMS with integrative medicine exposure, and three months of electives. Electives may include forensic psychiatry in inpatient or outpatient settings. Continuity care and outpatient psychiatry continue at roughly 20% through Endeavor Health Medical Group.

All years include a robust didactic curriculum aligned with the ACGME’s six core competencies:

  • Patient care
  • Medical knowledge
  • Practice-based learning
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Professionalism
  • Systems-based practice
