About the program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Swedish Hospital offers a well-rounded, community-focused training experience rooted in service to a diverse urban population. Residents gain strong inpatient and outpatient skills while working closely with dedicated faculty and supportive peers in a collaborative environment.

How to apply

Eligibility

  • MD or DO degree
  • Graduation within 3 years preferred
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • COMLEX or USMLE Step 1 (pass); Step 2 CK/CE (pass prior to ranking)
  • One year of U.S. clinical experience preferred
  • ECFMG-sponsored J1 visas accepted

Life as a resident

From competitive benefits and built-in wellness resources to a collaborative environment and supportive faculty, our program is designed to help residents thrive both professionally and personally. 

Annual stipends range from $77,084 (PGY-1) to $84,052 (PGY-3). All residents receive comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage. A $1,800 yearly meal allowance and CME funds—$1,000 in PGY-1 and PGY-2 and $2,000 in PGY-3—are also provided.

Residents train in modern clinical environments including Swedish Hospital and Erie Family Health Center – Foster. Additional resources include access to 24-hour medical libraries, online databases and simulation labs at Midwestern University and NorthShore.

Residents receive four hours of protected didactic time each week, covering core topics, board prep and skill-building sessions such as simulations and journal clubs. Support is available for scholarly activities, including quality improvement projects and conference presentations.

Residents receive 20 days of paid time off per year, plus 5 CME days. Wellness resources include free gym access at Galter LifeCenter, on-staff psychologist support and regular social events designed to build community and reduce stress.
